Barcode

Barcode Device

Barcode Reader

Select the type of barcode attached to your computer.

1.Keyboard barcode reader (PS/2 or USB)

You have two ways to use a keyboard barcode reader with IDpack. Both ways require that you configure your barcode reader to send a prefix and and a suffix code. Consult your barcode reader manual to see how to add prefixes and suffixes. We recommend the first way because it's faster and you do not need to go back to the Badge List every time.

1.Add HEX 07 to the prefix and HEX 13 to the suffix. When you scan a barcode, the "HEX 07" sent before the barcode will tell IDpack to search for the barcode and show the result in Badge Information. If you are already in Badge Information it will just update the records shown.

2.Add HEX 27  to the prefix and HEX 13 to the suffix. When you scan a barcode, the HEX 27 (ESC code) will focus on the Quick Find. Type the barcode into the text area and the HEX 13 (Enter code) will execute the search. This way is slower because by sending an ESC code, IDpack will go back to the Badge List and then conduct the search.

2.Serial barcode reader

Serial barcode readers are the fastest way to read barcodes, but serial connectors are not supported in new computers. Most new computers do not have a serial port. You just need to set up the Serial Communication Setting and you are done.

4.Flic Scanner barcode reader

FlicScanners use 3 types of connectors, but they all emulate a serial port. You need to know what port the FlicScanner has been set up in, then configure the Serial Communication Setting and you are done. They are very easy to set up and you don't need to send prefix of suffix codes.

Serial Communication Setting

This setup is only needed for serial barcode readers.

Port

In the pull-down menu, select the COM port used to talk to the barcode reader.

Speed

In the pull-down menu, select the connection speed for the barcode. The speed is very important: consult the barcode reader documentation to find out the default speed. Each manufacturer uses a different speed. FlicScanners uses 4800 bauds, Symbol uses 9600 bauds. Do your own test to find out.

Setting

Same as the speed: consult the barcode reader documentation to find out the setting for the protocol: n,8,1 or e,7,1.

Barcode Reader Testing

Start / Stop

After setting up your barcode reader, you can click the Start button and test your barcode to see if it works. If you don't see any barcode in the text area, it won't work in the application either. You must make sure that it works with the Barcode Reader Testing function. When you are done, click Stop. The function is useful with serial barcode readers for finding out the correct Serial Communication Setting.
